Description: As you can see, the Hallé orchestra celebrates spring (well, it was spring in England when this was released) with amazingly still-rare repertoire: only two other recordings of Bridge's vital and bracing work from 1927 (more French than "English pastoral") are currently available; Delius' early (1889) Idylle was only made available for performance in the 1990s and has only one other recording (Spring here is cool and Norwegian, the composer being somewhat in thrall to Grieg at this period); and Bax's Spring Fire of 1913, a five-movement symphony of languorous melodies and lush chromaticism leading to the turbulent Maenads finale has only the original 1986 Chandos recording as its competition. Hallé Orchestra; Mark Elder.
