Description: Pijper's first sonata of 1919 has influences from Debussy and Mahler, but his second (1922), melodically languid and rhythmically suggestive, is in his mature "single-cell" style. Escher's polytonal 1950 sonata comes from combining melodies which keep their own tonality; de Leeuw's 1955 sonatina is in his early, neo-classical style in which melodies develop and transform, eschewing traditional motif-working. Philippe Graffin (violin), Jelger Blanken (piano).
