PETER MAXWELL DAVIES (b.1934): Linguae Ignis for Cello and Ensemble, Vesalii Icones for Dancer, Cello and Ensemble, Fantasia on a Ground and 2 Pavans (after Purcell).
Catalogue Number: 09N064
Description: Linguæ ignis from 2002, continues Davies' long-standing tradition of composing works that incorporate music from medieval and Renaissance times, but the contrast between this and the other works here is marked; the plainsongs are treated more respectfully, and there is an underlying sense of tonality even in the piece's confrontational climax. Vesalii icones dates from 1969 when Davies was the enfant terrible of British music, and its superimposition of Vesalius' disturbingly graphic anatomical drawings upon the stations of the Cross is reflected in atonal music, with extended techniques and non-musical 'instruments', as well as kitsch parodies, intruding foxtrot rhythms. The Purcell 'realization' takes a similarly irreverent approach to a transcription of the Purcell originals. Vittorio Ceccanti (cello), Contempoartensemble; Mauro Ceccanti.
