Description: Fábregas' piece consists of five evocative movements depicting, and sometimes imitating, natural sounds of the Papua, New Guinea rain forest. Tuneful, tonal material is punctuated with birdsong imitations and evocations of wind and storm. Waring's Alapana is a work of atmosphere and mystery, evoking Indian mysticism. A gorgeous long-breathed duet for flute and cello is accompanied by temple bell sounds from the piano, enhanced by creative use of direct contact on the strings. The Larsen is nature-music, this time of the frozen north. The composer's idiom is impressionistic and harmonically ambiguous, though grounded in tonality; the evocations of blizzard, ice and freezing air, palpably vivid. Chen Yi's Night Thoughts is a lyrical fantasia based on the themes of an actual Chinese poem, with a range of playing techniques employed to suggest nocturnal images and atmosphere. Meininger Trio.
