Description: As in the previous disc we offered in November 2008, this collection of Kopczynski's thoroughly accessible works emphasizes free, rhapsodic expression and beauty of texture, though with a certain austerity in his harmonic language. The songs to sacred texts are straightforward in texture, in a gently modal vocabulary that suggests an intersection of liturgical chant and Romantic lieder. The piano sonatas display another side of the composer's character; these are dramatic works full of strong contrasts and a Romantic sensibility, with themes of opposition and conflict. Here and in the tough, determined violin sonata, with its contrasting lyrical middle movement, the composer's vocabulary makes much use of octatonic and whole-tone harmony with a resulting free-floating and ambiguous tonal feel. Latin, Polish texts. Ingrida Gápova (soprano), Marcin Kopczynski (piano).
