Description: This disc showcases a sample of British oboe music of the past 30 years by composers born in the middle four decades of the 20th century. The variety of styles and expressive intent is as wide as one might expect. Woolrich's characteristically dark-hued, introverted aphorisms after paintings by Paul Klee make effective use of the dynamics and articulation available on the oboe played conventionally, as largely do Berkeley's two Fierce Tears pieces. These musical expressions of grief and loss alternate anger and puzzled, yearning sorrow, and form the extrovertly emotional heart of the recital. MacMillan's work is a 9/11 memorial piece, a different kind of grieving, more public, more stylized, with extended techniques coming into play. Matthews also expands the instrument's palette with multiphonics in an uneasy, slightly sinister nocturne, while the Maxwell Davies is an unbroken line of melody, still, somber nature-music from a landscape of looming rocks and morning mists. James Turnbull (oboe), Huw Watkins (piano), Claire Jones (harp).
