PETER MENNIN (1923-1983): Symphonies No. 3 and No. 7 "Variation-Symphony", Moby Dick - Concertato for Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 09O012
Description: In the original notes to this release (not reproduced here), it was noted that Mennin wrote music devoid of humor and charm (but so did Schuman); what he specialized in was the contrapuntal energy, percussive accents and propulsive rhythms you'll find in the Third while the one-movement Seventh adds a Bergian dissonance in its series of intensely contrasted episodes. Tough and steely then but exciting (and easier to enjoy than Schuman). Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz. Original 1995 Delos release.
