Description: Enriquez' style, consistently highly accomplished and expressive, passed through several distinct phases, as illustrated by this disc. The common feature seems to have been an extrovert sense of drama; the overture, for instance, is far more dramatic than lyrical. This work is from the 1960s, when he was experimenting with a loose form of dodecaphony, as is Poema, also an impressive, but unexpectedly aggressive piece. The two concerti are from opposite ends of his career, with a kind of nationalism-inflected mid-century modernity; not atonal by any means, but with amply dissonant harmonies. El y ... ellos (1971) is from his most modernistic period, with some striking aleatoric textures. Filarmónica de Querétaro; Sergio Cardenas.
