MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG (1919-1996): Suite for Orchestra (First Recording), Symphony No. 17, Op. 137 “Memory”.
Catalogue Number: 10S063
Description: Weinberg completists will want the 19-minute Suite from 1950, a time when many Soviet composers didn’t know what was safe to write, leading to works like this (Romance, Humoresque, Waltz, Polka and Galop are the inoffensive movement titles; much attractive writing for wind instruments). The symphony from 1982-84 is the first of a trilogy to which Weinberg gave the title "The Threshold of War" and looks back not only to the Second World War but probably also to his persecution under the later stages of Stalin's regime. A grey, sorrowful first movement is followed by a big, agitated Allegro molto, a fairly brief and vigorous scherzo and a long Andante finale, sometimes frozen in terms of emotion, ends in a grandiose, G major conclusion. Siberian State Symphony Orchestra (Krasnoyarsk); Vladimir Lande.
