Description: The four new pieces were commissioned as responses to Janáček's Second Quartet, and all, to a greater or lesser extent, borrow from aspects of his uniquely idiomatic voice. Rohde's Inside Voice reflects the urgent passion and introspection of Janáček's piece, and something of his buoyant harmony and penchant for repeated motivic writing. Childs' Unrequited is unabashedly neo-romantic, a portrait of a hopelessly one-sided love affair, expressed in pained melodies and abrupt shifts of mood. Knell's Intimate Voices takes its material from the Janáček, but explores its gentle, inward-looking side, in a slowly evolving tapestry of soft, melancholy chords and wistful melody. Broughton's Fancies, 'a combination of infatuations, impulses and improvisatory impulses' is a kind of commentary on Janáček's style as a whole, beyond the quartet; robust, electrifyingly energetic and unpredictable. Lyris Quartet.
