Description: The Blue Bird was music written in 1913 for a staging of Maeterlinck’s play, very familiar already with its noble rising figures and folk music with modal harmony. The Masque music and Christmas Overture all use folk songs and all date from 1934. Matthews’ piece is a reconstruction of VW’s 1907 Norfolk Rhapsody No. 3 with his own, editorializing final section suggesting the effect upon Vaughan Williams of his experiences in the First World War. Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Martin Yates.
