Description: A friend of Chopin from childhood and the editor of his posthumous opus numbers 66-74, Fontana was also a traveler, lawyer, journalist, translator, soldier and virtuoso pianist. His years spent in Cuba and the two works recorded here which were composed there will make you think of Gottschalk except Fontana is less "larger-than-life" (and the jota aragonesa in the last movement of La Havanne is the same tune Liszt used eleven years later in his Spanish Rhapsody. Although there are occasional reminiscences of Chopin, the melancholy and poetic feeling in much of this music is due to Fontana being a Polish exile, not a copier of his friend. Hubert Rutkowski (piano).
