WILLIAM GRANT STILL (1895-1978): Symphony No. 4 "Autochthonous", Symphony No. 5 "Western Hemisphere", Poem.
Catalogue Number: 11L005
Description: These works date from 1944 (the Poem), 1945 and 1947 and have in common the desire to portray a post-war world of peace and freedom, led, of course, by the rising races of the Western Hemisphere who would "convert our ideals into realities". Just the sort of thing jaded present-day intellectuals, who've seen how well that worked out, will love to sneer at. But the music, full of major-key striving and kinetic energy, leavened by slow movements of glowing calm and spirituality (a few very brief hints of African-American folk music in the Fourth), is of an immediately recognizable "American" type for its period and will amply reward collectors of American symphonists. Fort Smith Symphony; John Jeter.
