Description: Bacewicz' personal style of neo-classicism (her studies were in Paris), juxtaposing exuberance and lyricism with a pervasive sense of forward motion in which delicacy and muscularity attain a fine sense of balance and in which joie de vivre and seriousness are not mutually exclusive either, is present throughout all these pieces, from the early 1936 Sinfonietta, the 1946 symphony (baroque stylizations but with a gritty, rhythmically driven language) and her most-performed work - the 1948 concerto - to the 1958 Music, an acknowledgement of what was going on in Western avant-garde music. Uncompromising, effectively expressive, strikingly desolate in its slow movement, it remains, all said and done, in her strongly characterful neo-classical voice. First recordings of the Sinfonietta and Symphony. New London Orchestra; Ronald Corp.
