Description: Fernandes' concerto is an attractive, conventional four-movement specimen, neoclassically elegant, with neo-romantic tendencies, quasi-Rachmaninov. A romantic first movement is followed by a dancing scherzo with the feel of a classical minuet and an intimate slow movement, recalling the æsthetic of the first movement. The finale is a lively dance, with a tender, melodic central section. Atalaya's oddity is a 1968 composition written apparently for Moog synthesizer which varies a simple motif timbrally and rhythmically - and ingeniously, within the constraints of synthesizer music of the time. Constantin Sandu (piano), Orquestra Raízes Ibéricas; José Atalaya.
