EUGÈNE YSAE (1858-1931): Sonata in A Minor for 2 Violins, Op. posth., String Trio "Le Chimay", Op. posth., Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 28.
Catalogue Number: 11L057
Description: The earliest of these three rarities is the 1915 two-violin sonata whose frequent use of double-stops and multi-layered chords make it sound more like a string quartet; the solo cello sonata dates from the same time as the second solo violin sonata (1923) and has many of the same characteristics as the solo violin sonatas in general (Ysaÿe was also an accomplished cellist), while the string trio (1927) inhabits an early Schoenbergian world of thinly-stretched tonality as in Verklärte Nacht. Henning Kraggerud, Bård Monsen (violins), Lars Anders Tomter (viola), Ole-Eirik Ree (cello).
