Description: A doctor who ditched medecine to study music with Thille (and, later, marry his daughter), Courvoisier as lieder composer strikingly follows his countryman Schoeck. His earlier songs are influenced by Wolf, as were Schoeck's; his op. 27 sets several Eichendorff texts at almost exactly the same time Schoeck was doing so as well (1917-19) but in the late Old German songs of Op. 29, a few Mahlerian echoes (some of the texts are from Des knaben Wunderhorn) fail to obscure an inventive, original voice. German texts. Jeannine Hirzel (soprano), Robin Adams (baritone), Edward Rushton (piano).
