Description: Like many pianist-composers Frey was influenced by all the various streams and styles of his period, but his period had a far greater stylistic variety than that of the great early Romantic period. When one says that the works recorded here contain hints, echoes and hommages from Brahms, Fauré, Scriabin, Ravel, Busoni, Shostakovich and Prokofiev, it's because Frey was a German-speaker by birth, studied in Paris, taught in pre-Revolution Moscow, performed throughout Europe, had friendly ties with many famous composers (Enescu dedicated his F sharp minor piano sonata to him) and, in his final period of residence and teaching in Switzerland, was at the literal center of European musical currents. Karl-Andreas Kolly (piano).
