BENJAMIN BRITTEN (1913-1976): The Beggar's Opera, Op. 43.
Catalogue Number: 11L080
Description: Britten was only the latest in nearly a dozen composers to "revise" this early 18th century work when he produced this version in 1948 but he thought enough of it to issue it an opus number. Unlike Frederick Austin, whose 1920 version used bowdlerized texts and only 45 of the original 69 "airs", Britten uses 66 and wrote his own overture from tunes associated with the principal characters and also supplied original accompaniments. The instrumental forces are almost identical with those for The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herring, which are contemporary with this production. 2 CDs. Libretto included. Susan Bickley, Leah-Marian Jones (mezzos), Jeremy White (bass-baritone), Tom Randle (tenor), Sarah Fox (soprano), City of London Sinfonia; Christian Curnyn.
