Description: Nørgård has composed for the piano - his instrument - throughout his career, including a number of short character-pieces, dedication pieces and studies, collected here. The animal pieces are attractive and humorous, based on dance rhythms, or in the case of the 'blackbird' piece, a very free transcription of a Beatles song. These, and the Friends suite date from the height of the composer's investigation of his 'infinity series' concept, and are very free tonally; the suite in particular expands in complexity (and accordingly, virtuosity) in the manner that has been related to fractal geometry in Nørgård's work, while remaining light in mood and accessible. The Fragments, Studies and Sketches date from the very beginning of the 1960s, when Nørgård was developing the infinity series method, and the workings of the finely interrelated rhythmic and melodic series are clearly audible in these particularly effective demonstrations of this fertile technique. A preponderance of lively, dancing melodies prevent any suggestion of the works ever sounding like an academic exercise. Erik Kaltoft (piano).
