Description: Constant, restless innovation and experiment, principally in the field of timbre, are Keller's primary compositional goals. In the piano concerto, every conceivable means of preparation is applied to the piano, as well as to the other instruments, and extended playing techniques, microtones and noise textures are the norm. A relationship to more conventional music is provided by the composer's use of recognizable rhythms with a strong pulse, derived from African drumming and jazz, among other influences. The sonata has all four instruments prepared in various ways; again, passages of clear rhythmic meter anchor the music's wilder timbral extravagances. From time to time a conventional chord or melody fragment will appear, with the shock-value of an alien artifact by virtue of its disconnection from its surroundings. Restricted to a solo instrument, the contrast between extended playing techniques and pulsing, dynamic rhythm is displayed to great advantage in the surprisingly accessible Szene, which sets up a 'rhythms section' of plosive mouthpiece effects against which multiphonics, and isolated tones form a kind of melodic patterning. The violin and piano work forces the two instruments into a kind of violent dispute, mostly avoiding the extreme timbral experiments of the other works here in favor of clusters and complexicist note-swarms from the piano and wild gesticulation and gestural bravura from the violin.
