JOHANN RUFINATSCHA (1812-1893): Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, 3 Concert Arias (Belinda Loukota [soprano], Andreas Mattersberger [bass-baritone]).

Description: This 1846 symphony (47 minutes in four movements) is Rufinatscha’s reaction to the Beethoven Fifth in the same key - as stormy as you’d expect in the first movement and continued angst in the slow one but the scherzo is an endearingly bumpy rural Austrian affair while the monumentality of the finale looks forward to Bruckner. The undated concert arias are full-scale jobs - 7, 10 and 14 minutes - and inhabit the later worlds of Brahms and Wagner. Since the Chandos Rufinatscha series appears to have died at one, I’m going to be bringing in more of these recordings by the Tirol State Museum in Austria.
