Description: Here’s a happy trio of World Premiere Recordings; in fact, it’s the only CD available with any music by Kaun. Born in Berlin, Kaun studied composition under Kiel and later moved to the U.S. and spent 1887 to 1902 as a choirmaster and composer in Milwaukee while also helping Theodor Thomas and Frederick Stock foster the music of Brahms and Bruckner at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. All three of these works are notable for the memorable melodic and rhythmic qualities of their thematic material; no dates are given in the notes but the earlier two works come from Kaun’s American period. Brahmsian but not late Brahmsian, these are often youthfully dynamic, instantly appealing and will make you hopeful that someone will offer one of his three symphonies or some of his tone poems and concert overtures. Berolina Ensemble.
