JULIUS REUBKE (1834-1858): Piano Sonata in B Flat Minor, Sonata on the 94th Psalm (transcr. August Stradal [1860-1930]), Adagio from Sonata on the 94th Psalm (transcr. Reubke).

Description: All Romantic Piano collectors have the Reubke sonata but almost none of them will know the organ sonata since, even though they’re sometimes coupled, piano fanciers are not organ freaks. So here, with the newly rediscovered Stradal to thank (see 05L053 and 03O043 for his Liszt transcriptions and 04O041 and 10Q041 for Wagner transcriptions), you piano guys now have another 25-minute sonata for your groaning shelves. It was published in 1925 and is especially effective in the fugal finale. And you can compare it with Reubke’s own piano version of the Adagio which, because it’s undated, can’t tell us more about the chronology of the organ work. Markus Becker (piano).
