Description: It is good to welcome these characterful and highly regarded (Penguin Guide Rosette) accounts of MacDowell's splendid romantic concertos back to the catalogue, now coupled with a brand-new recording of the complete New England Idyls. Don't be put off by the quaint, picturesque titles of some of these; all are evocative little gems, and when taken seriously the best of them - Old White Pine, Log Cabin, Deep Woods - are clearly hewn from the same timber as the epic slow movements of MacDowell's powerful sonatas, among the best of the post-Lisztian genre. Donna Amato (piano), London Philharmonic Orchestra; Paul Freeman. Original 1985 Olympia release (concerti).
