Description: Apart from Composizione per voce, which consists of a stylized elaboration of a particular type of Sicilian folk-singing, incorporating sobbing, shouting and microtonal inflections, these works are tumultuous conglomerations of musical micro-events, fragmented and hectic. Casale employs electronic sounds freely, as well as extended playing techniques including noise sounds, both to expand the timbral palette and to enrich the available range of contrapuntal effects. The fractured, obsessive rhythm suggests precise yet malfunctioning mechanisms, machinery in overdrive but whose purpose or programming has become scrambled, irrational. The works have an irresistible energy and vitality, generating excitement and engaging attention despite their dense textures and motivic complexity.
