Description: The neo-classical side we've heard recently of Tansman through his symphonies and other large-scale works is only half of his musical personality. Throughout his life he also wrote works, mainly for solo piano, based on the Polish folk tradition, such as these two (of four) sets of mazurkas (1932 and 1941 respectively). An atmosphere of tender melancholy pervades these stylized dances (Nine in the second volume and 8 in the Third) which do not quote original folk material, leavened by a few fast obereks in each set.
