Description: Here's a mystery: we offered volume one in April of 2006 but volume two never materialized. Now, Meridian has reissued both (original jewel boxes in a cardboard sleeve) still at full-price. From what I can tell, volume two was never formally released in the U.S. One and Two are early (1916 and 1929) the former still in the Schubert-Bruckner tradition and the latter harmonically more astringent and pushing towards atonality. Three and Four (1969 and 1970) are more chromatic and complex but manage to do this in an expressive, generally approchable manner (hints of ländler in No. 3's scherzando). The 1934 Mozart variations are as tonal and likeable as you'd want them to be and the very early Intermezzi (1914) are attractive and genial with intimations of Austrian folk-music. 2 CDs. Edinburgh Quartet.
