Description: Gurney's pieces have only one other recording (the last three listed above are only available here): the Nocturnes are Klavierst├╝cke in the style of Schumann (probably entrance pieces for the RCM around 1908-09) while his later preludes (1919-20) are not at all "songs without words" as one might expect from a song composer but more like an English Faur├ę in the making. Howell's three pieces last 20 minutes and are bleaker and more austere than the chamber music he was writing around the same time (just after the Great War); he later orchestrated the third, Procession. Alan Gravill (piano), Jeremy Filsell (piano - Howells). Original 1990 Gamut release; original 1994 Guild release (Howells).
