MIKHAIL KUZMIN (1872-1936): Alexandrian Songs, Parts 1 & 2, Sacred Verses.
Catalogue Number: 01N047
Label: Northern Flowers
Reference: NF/PMA 9993
Description: If you read these liner notes or look up Kuzmin on Russian-oriented web-sites, you'll find him described as a Silver Age poet, translator, writer and, in his early years (roughly before 1906), composer especially of exquisite and intimate songs. English-language sources are happy to point out that Kuzmin was the first major gay figure in Russian literature - and the translation of the Russian texts in the booklet is quite happy to continue the obfuscation, in one case translating "you" (an object of the poet's longing) as "a woman". This collection of 17 songs are all to his own poetry and the Alexandrian Songs especially are of a sun-lit, uncluttered, beautifully Classical poetic style, seconded by his accompaniments. A real find both for poetry lovers and song collectors. Transliterated Russian-English texts. Mila Shkirtil (mezzo), Yuri Serov (piano).
