LEONARDO BALADA (b.1933): Transparency of Chopin's First Ballade, Preludis Obstinants, Contrastes, Mini-Miniatures, Música en Cuatro Tiempos, Alairving Variation, Persistencies.
Catalogue Number: 01N064
Description: Balada's solo piano music combines his modernist and Romantic tendencies, while acknowledging the piano's traditional idioms, which the composer admits he finds present natural boundaries to the instrument's use in contemporary music. Transparency thus confronts Chopin with Balada's own harmonic thinking, while the Preludis obsessively explore ideas which could have been taken from the established piano literature. This contrast between tradition and modernism occurs again and again - chords and clusters, simple lyricism and spiky virtuosity - in the short Mini-Miniatures, the Música, and Contrastes. The competition piece Persistencies combines these characteristics with some minimalistic elements. Pablo Amorós (piano).
