HARRY PARTCH (1901-1974): Music, Vol. 1 - Bitter Music.
Catalogue Number: 01N095
Description: This is a diary of Partch's eight months as a hobo, living in shelters, working in fields, hitching rides from Southern California to Seattle in 1935-36, presented as a quasi-musical theatre piece by veteran Partch performers. The booklet contains 31 pages of Partch's texts and ink drawings from the journey although not the music which is heard here (notated by Partch as he traveled). Comparisons with Kerouac's "On the Road" or Depression-era autobiographical accounts of hobo life by Tom Kromer or Nelson Algren will suggest themselves without, of course, the music, performed on copies of Partch's famous self-created instruments. 3 CDs for the price of 2. John Schneider (subjective voice, adapted viola, adapted guitar), Garry Eister (objective voice, piano), Richard Valitutto (piano), Paul West (kithara).
