Description: A religious drama in three acts from 1820 which was left unfinished (15 minutes of the second act are extant), Lazarus is a strikingly innovative work, removing the line between recitative and aria and between secco and accompanied recitative, full of the word-setting prowess one expects from the Lieder of this productive period (the Mass in A and Unfinished symphony are from the same years), while the notes make an argument for the deep conviction of the setting and the forward-looking Romantic quality of the music coming from the inward turn many artists took to escape from political repression of liberal political ideas. No texts. Carola Nossek, Ursula Reinhardt-Kiss (sopranos), Ingeborg Springer (mezzo), Eberhard Büchner, Horst Gebhardt (tenors), Bernd Riedel (baritone), Berliner Singakademie, Staatskapelle Berlin; Dietrich Knothe. Original 1978 VEB Deustsche Schallplatten LP release.
