PETER MAXWELL DAVIES (b.1934): Caroline Mathilde - Concert Suites from the Ballet, Chat Moss, Ojai Festival Overture
Catalogue Number: 01Q054
Description: Davies' second ballet, composed in 1991, tells the tragic story of the sister of mad King George III of England, married off to mad King Christian VII of Denmark. She took a lover, who was executed on the orders of the king's mother, and, reviled by the populace, was sent into exile. The ballet is largely tonal and very approachable, the neo-romantic end of Davies output, richly descriptive, and the suites follow the narrative in key scenes, with the second notably darker than the first. The overture is jaunty and appealing, even popular in style, and Chat Moss is a vividly pictorial miniature tone poem, originally for young players. BBC Philharmonic; Peter Maxwell Davies. Original 1991, 1995 and 1996 Collins Classics releases.
