Description: The 12-minute Balada from 1914 is the main event here; it makes use of two popular songs of the period in a treatment dating from the height of Ponce’s romantic nationalist period. The remainder of the disc (apart from a third recording of the 1912 first piano concerto) consists of short piano pieces (lyrical and Romantic) and a piano version of a 13-minute incomplete ballet score which dates from 1927 when the composer was in France and whose subject matter derives from Afro-Cuban musical sources.
