Description: Counting two on Russian Disc (Mravinsky and Stepan Turchak) and one on Marco Polo (reissued in 2014 on Naxos), this is the fourth recording of the Ukrainian composer’s 1951 symphony in reaction to the Great Patriotic War. Worth noting is that the original final movement, which had been the reason the work was banned by the Soviet culture wolves, is the one recorded here (all bright, pealing bells championing peace). This would not have been the case with the two RDs and may not for the 1993 Marco Polo either (I don’t have the disc to hand). But this is the most vivid recording, with a Ukrainian conductor and his own orchestra giving it, and the big tone-poem from 1955 their all. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; Kirill Karabits.
