Description: Nothing very common here even though only one and a quarter pieces are first recordings. Chapultepec (1917, rev. 1923, 1929 and 1934) is the most Impressionistic work on the disc while the four Estampas (1908/12, rev. c. 1923) tend more to the late Romantic, as does the Merlin suite of 1929, done at the behest of the Albéniz family, which distils the Spanish composer’s opera’s musical and dramatic themes into a 19-minute “Opera Without Words”. Mexican indigenous music rules in the ten-minute suite of six Instantáneas (“Snapshots”) of 1947. Copious and very good notes too! Orquesta Sinfónica de San Luis Potosí; José Miramontes Zapata.
