Description: As usual with Sciarrino, a programme full of surprises and fascinating timbral originality. La navigazione notturna builds an extraordinary sound-sculpture from almost no material, at least for most of its duration. Dense little gestures in the bass register are passed around between the four pianos in a striking demonstration of the expressive power of spatialization as a thematic element. At the very end the music suddenly effloresces into a complexicist effusion of scintillant texture. The desolate arias from the composer's Perseo e Andromeda are accompanied by interjections of subtle electronic sounds, "subtractively synthesized" from acoustic origins - in other words, not electronically generated nor compiled from "found" materials. Like all Sciarrino's theatre works, this music is immersive, otherworldly and hauntingly beautiful, if simultaneously disorienting and a little - sometimes more than a little - disturbing; the tempestuous seascape of the second aria places the listener in the center of the maelstrom. Il giardino di Sara transfers the narrative spoken inflections of Sicilian folk singing into Sciarrino's sound-world of fragile, evanescent instrumental gestures. Altri notti grew out of the rehearsals for a concert of Sciarrino's Notturni, a kind of controlled improvisation, layering gestures from the different works with limited freedom within certain performance parameters. Italian-English texts. Alda Caiello (mezzo), Alfonso Alberti, Fausto Bongelli, Anna D’Errico, Aldo Orvieto (pianos), Ex Novo Ensemble.
