Description: Thorvaldsdottir's music is frequently reflective of natural phenomena and structures; as she explains: " ... when I am inspired by a particular element that I perceive in nature, it is because I find it musically interesting. The qualities I tend to be inspired by are often structural, like proportion and flow ...". Her particular brand of 'nature music' thus consists of slabs or floes of slow-moving material; almost a kind of 'ambient music' though produced by musical means that go far beyond the consonant chords that that term usually implies, extending to some quite advanced extended techniques and instrumental 'preparation'; this can result in a high degree of dissonance, at least by the standards of 'conventional' music, even extending to noise textures - breathing, rasping, clattering - though overall there is a consistent lack of aggression or conflict, and the bedrock, so to speak, is quite consonant. Occasionally sounds suggestive of the whooping of lonely, distant wild birds, or a melodic fragment that could be a half-remembered folksong, surface and subside. The pieces are all very different, suggesting a diversity of natural forms, structures and processes. Imagine poring minutely over a series of photographs by Ansel Adams, exploring the textures and relationships between pebbles, rivers, towering cliffs and clouds, shadows and light; Thorvaldsdottir's works provide a similarly awe-inspiring, objectively and meticulously observed experience.
