Description: First recording of the 1839 completion of Haydn's last mass, commissioned by Maria Therese but left unfinished a few bars into the Dies irae in the Sequentia by his death. Kronecker was a choirmaster at the Kremsmünster Benedictine monastery in Upper Austria and he used both Mozart's Requiem and Haydn's own Schrattenbach Requiem in the formal layout, sometimes borrowing themes from the latter while his own melodies are in the Biedermeier style, influenced by Schubert and with a lyrical and folk-song character. Lydia Teuscher (soprano), Manami Kusano (alto), Julian Prégardien (tenor), Jens Hamann (bass), Saarbrücken Chamber Choir, Mannheim Chamber Philharmonic; Georg Grün. SACD
