CARL MILLÖCKER (1842-1899): Der arme Jonathan.
Catalogue Number: 02I045
Reference: GL 100.781
Description: Dating from 1890, this was the very first of the line of operettas which would be set in the exotic locale of the United States. Featuring a character modeled after Cornelius Vanderbilt and a poor cook, it ends in double suicide and so is rather a black comedy in the bargain. Tubby sound with some radio noise - seems about 15 years older than it is but voices are clear enough. 2 CDs. No libretto. Werner Hollweg, Rüdiger Wohlers (tenors), Hildegarde Herschele (soprano), Dora Koschat (mezzo), Cologne Radio Choir and Orchestra; Leopold Hager (Nov. 7, 1980).
