Description: This "Schreker and his Pupils" collection brings us only the second recording of Krenek's first symphony (1921), a sprawling, often atonal, frequently contrapuntal work in nine sections; two short string orchestra pieces by the teacher himself and the rather more substantial orchestral songs of Berger (more of whose orchestral music we offered last October on Toccata Classics - 10J010). Lasting 23 minutes and dating from 1919, they assimilate much of the "new music" then current, from Richard Strauss and Reger to Debussy and will appeal to late Romantic collectors (the note writer gives a synopsis of each song). No texts. Dietrich Henschel (baritone), Lucerne Symphony Orchestra; John Axelrod.
