ERIK CHISHOLM (1904-1965): Piano Music, Vol. 4 - Piobaireachd for Solo Piano, Nos. 5-8 and 10-13, Sonatina No. 3, 8 Cameos, 6 Portraits.
Catalogue Number: 02K084
Description: This continuing series provides more snapshots of this exceptionally prolific and energetic composer. These discs round out the emerging portrait of on the one hand a solid, tonality-based composer of vigorous and inventive concert pieces - the sonatas, sonatinas and character pieces like the appealing brief Cameos with their various literary or visual inspirations - and on the other, an ardent admirer, collector and cataloguer of ethnic musics - mainly, though not exclusively, of his naive Scotland, an activity that earned him the sobriquet "MacBartók" in some quarters. His incorporation of folk-material into concert music ranged from folk-influenced melodies in his original compositions to harmonisations of actual folk tunes (as on Vol. 1 last month - 01K075) to explorations of the bagpipe music of the highlands, the Piobaireachd (Pibroch), essentially improvised variations on original melodies over a drone accompaniment, of which Chisholm made various piano transcriptions and arrangements. Murray MacLachlan (piano). Original 2008 Dunelm release.
