CYRIL SCOTT (1879-1970): Piano Trios Nos. 1 & 2, Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Clarinet Quintet, Cornish Boat Song for Piano Trio.
Catalogue Number: 02L084
Description: The Scott recordings continue to pour out of Dutton and Chandos and everything here is a World Premiere Recording except for the clarinet quintet. The biggest work is the 34-minute first piano trio of 1920 which both subscribes to late Romanticism and slyly undermines it with effective use of mutes and sul ponticello (a real ghostly passage in the trioof the scherzo) and constantly changing unusual time signatures. The other trios and the quintet are all late works of the 50s, terser, shorter and harmonically very free and chromatic while still being shot through with instrumental color and lyricism. Robert Plane (clarinet), Mia Cooper (violin), David Adams (viola), Gould Piano Trio.
