MIECZYSLAW KARLOWICZ (1876-1909): Serenade, Op. 2, Violin Concerto in A, Op. 8.
Catalogue Number: 02M070
Description: The two most recorded works by this Polish composer make it to Naxos: the 1902 concerto has Tchaikovsky as its model and there is plenty of virtuosity where it should be and contemplativeness in like manner but no overt use of folk music or folk-like motifs, just pure European Romanticism. The Serenade, which has several other recordings, dates from 1897 and, despite expectations, was modeled not on Tchaikovsky's but on one by Robert Volkmann. Ilya Kaler (violin), Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra; Antoni Wit.
