Description: It took a long time for Rimsky to realize that he was not ever going to be a chamber music composer. This 39-minute, four-movement trio was begun in 1897 at the request of the musical patron Belayev and left incomplete (the notes are unhelpful as to what state this was), the composer Steinberg finishing it in 1939. The Oistrakh-Knushevitsky-Oborin trio recorded it in 1952 but it was never published until 1970 and there have been very few recordings since. Its style is, surprisingly, German Romantic, with Schumann and Mendelssohn the main influences and there are only a couple of instances of Russian color but it's a sturdy, well-composed piece of Romantic chamber music.
