Description: Bantock's 1919 sonata is a big (40 minutes) three-movement piece as turbulent and passionate as any of his tone-poems which you know from their Hyperion recordings (and the finale's main theme is an Irish jig). This is not the same version of Holbrooke's equally romantic sonata which appeared on Naxos last September (09N007); that was its original "concerto" version (which will soon be heard on cpo) for piano while this one has a somewhat less technically demanding final movement (the work's "sonata" version). The traycard calls this "Authorised Original Version" (but the original version is for orchestra, right?). Rupert Marshall-Luck (violin, viola), Matthew Rickard (piano).
