Description: This 1908 operetta was based on George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man" (the 1941 film of the same title uses much of Straus' music but has a completely different plot). Shaw's many stipulations for the use of his original also included his not receiving any royalties for the play, a misjudgement when it became an international success. What did Shaw think of it? "A putrid opera bouffe in the worst taste of 1860." (he always did have trouble expressing his true feelings). Unlike the above release, this 1993 radio recording was never released on CD. Enjoy! 2 CDs for the price of 1. No libretto. Johannes Martin Kränzle (baritone), Caroline Stein (soprano), John Dickie (tenor), Martina Borst (mezzo), Händel Collegium Cologne, Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra; Siegfried Köhler.
