Description: More examples of Holmboe's "Zen-like balance between intellect and nature" as the note on the tray-card puts it. Clearly laid out, direct in expression, often using his characteristic metamorphosis technique of deriving the entire contents of a work through continuous development of a small musical theme, these chamber works include one of Holmboe's last compositions, 1991's Eco, a wind quintet (1957) fully in the bracing tradition of Nielsen, a solo cello sonata of 1968-69 exhibiting two lifelong interests (Bach and Balkan folk music), a humorously denoted work from 1956 for a quartet of medical doctors, and a 1973 sextet which he manages to make sound like a chamber orchestra. There is surely much more to hear in this valuable series so let's hope Dacapo continues at what is, for them, a relatively quick pace (16 months since Vol. 1). Ensemble MidtVest.
