CAMARGO GUARNIERI (1907-1993): Piano Music, Vol. 1 - Dança Negra, Dança Brasileira, Dança Selvagem, Suite Mirim, Ponteios: Books I-V, Sonata.
Catalogue Number: 02O012
Description: The second most important Brazilian composer after Villa-Lobos gets some welcome attention with the beginning of this series. His 50 Ponteios (a Portuguese term for a type of guitar prelude) were written over a long period, from 1931 to 1959, and contain an enormous variety of Brazilian musical styles and moods and their tonal ambivalence gives many of them a nostalgic and melancholy character (the titles Triste or Tristemente appear seven times; there's even a Torturado). The 1972 sonata, his only work with that title (although there are several sonatinas) distills, à la Bartók or Stravinsky, traditional musical elements without resorting to actual quotation. 2 CDs. Max Barros (piano).
